Assessing a school group's exposure to air pollution

Context

The city of Schiltigheim has initiated a project to create a new school, the School Group Simone Veil, on the site of the former brewery Fischer. In order to have an idea of the exposure to air pollution of this area, the city of Schiltigheim has mandated AIR&D to carry out an air quality study.

To do so, three-dimensional models of the dispersion of pollutants from road traffic of the adjacent roads were carried out. These models are based on a 3D Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model in order to take into account the complexity of the construction project and the weather. In addition, a measurement campaign was also conducted to qualify the initial state.

This study showed that the concentrations of nitrogen dioxide and fine particles respect the regulatory values in the study area. In addition, the results also showed the interest of having raised the playground, strongly decreasing the concentrations of air pollutants and thus protecting the children who will occupy it.
